Giggles, Raspberries, Nicknames & Quirks

1) GIGGLES: So as I mentioned, Henry is laughing more and more these days.  It really is my favorite sound in the world.  He is starting to enjoy playing little games like peek-a-boo - you can really see him anticipating the "reveal."  Then he giggles like crazy.  Also, Matt started playing a game with him dubbed "tickle birds" where he wiggles his fingers above Henry and then slowly "flies" them in to "attack" (aka tickle) Henry's tummy.  Henry loves it.  He watches Matt's fingers so intently and he waves his arms and legs as the "birds" are flying in; then he laughs and laughs once Matt actually tickles him.  It is the sweetest thing.  I really love seeing those two together.
Best friends.
2) RASPBERRIES: Henry has also learned to blow raspberries.  I have no idea where he learned to do it, but he'll be playing by himself somewhere and I'll hear him blowing little bubbles with his mouth.  He'll do it for the whole time he is playing.  It's pretty funny.
Playing in my room.
3) NICKNAMES:  Honestly, I get a little embarrassed just thinking about sharing these because they are pretty ridiculous, but I want to remember them 10 years from now, so here they are.  And here's hoping Henry doesn't kill me when he is a teenager and someone mentions this post.

 - Snuggle bug (aka: snugs, snuggle buggle, snugs bugs and basically any other variation I come up with on any given day):  This is my nickname for him lately.  I don't remember exactly when I started calling him that but he is so snugly, especially when he sleeps, and I just can't help myself.  I probably call him this more often than I call him Henry.

 - MegaMan! (said with an exclamation point always, because you have to say it like you're announcing a super hero):  This is Matt's nickname for him.  Apparently, there is an old video game called MegaMan...it is one of the really old games that has very basic graphics (think old-school Donkey Kong), and Matt thinks that Henry looks like the main character, MegaMan.  He calls him this all the time...sometimes I worry that Henry might think his name is actually MegaMan!  Seriously, he seems to respond to it more often than he does to his real name.

What'd you call me?!
4) QUIRKS:
  • Henry sometimes sleeps with is eyes half-open. It is creepy, but apparently I do this too.
  • Lately, while drinking his bottle, Henry has started taking his left hand and putting it on his forehead/left eye.  He's not rubbing his eye so much as just looking dramatic, like Scarlet O'Hara reminding herself to "think of it another day."
Case in point.
  • He's started to be very weary of car rides.  I noticed it at Easter when we were driving back from the beach.  He started to cry until I got in the backseat with him.  Once I was sitting back there, he was fine.  He did the same thing on our way home from the CF Walk.  I don't want my babe crying the whole way home, but I also don't want to forever have to sit in the backseat with him either!  And if it is just me and him, I can't!  For example, when I pick him up from preschool he's always really happy.  Usually, we stick around for a few minutes and he plays with everyone in the office.  Then I load him into his car seat and we're out the door.  As soon as we pull out of the church parking lot he starts to cry and will do so the entire way home.  Once I pull into our garage he is instantly quiet...like magic.  I know he's not hungry or hurting and he doesn't have a dirty diaper...I think he just gets mad being in the car seat by himself.  It's kind of funny, but it also tears your nerves up a bit. Thankfully, our ride home from work isn't very long.  Here's hoping this is just a phase!
  • And this isn't really a quirk, but just for posterity's sake...we've started experimenting with rice cereal and baby oatmeal.  They say you can start them on solid foods anytime between 4-6 months.  A lot of my friends waited until 6 months, but Henry's closing in on 5, so I figured we could just try it a few times and see how it goes.  The first time was a total failure.  He had no idea what I was doing or why I was trying to put the spoon in his mouth.  The second time he let me put the spoon in his mouth, but he spit it back out.  The third time, we tried oatmeal instead of rice cereal (I was thinking it may taste a little better and the consistency is the exact same)...he'd actually open his mouth for me when I brought the spoon up, but he still spit out most of the food.  I figure we'll just keep trying.  It is not vital that he start eating solids yet, and he has improved a little each time.  Honestly, I think that once he figures out that it is food that I am trying to give him, he'll be all over it.  That boy still loves to eat!

Summer Lovin'

Summer is officially here, and we are loving it.  There are so many great things about this time of year: warmer weather, longer days, more time outside, the pool, cookouts, etc.  We've been trying to enjoy all of those things the past few weeks and look forward to more weeks of them to come!

I love the pool!

I am a very snazzy dresser in the summer!

Well, at least someone was asleep during naptime!

Actually, that last caption isn't completely accurate.  Henry fell asleep not long after I took that photo.  We're working on getting in at least a two-hour nap each afternoon, and we're specifically working on taking that nap in his crib.  He will sleep perfectly if I hold him the hole time, but we're making progress on the napping-in-crib front.  He's made it at least an hour in his crib every day this week.  There is hope yet!

Otherwise, our little guy is just still growing like crazy.  You can just see him learning things.  It is amazing.  As you can see in the picture above, we've started sitting him in his exersaucer some.  He's not quite heavy enough to make his legs touch, but with the help of a pillow, he does pretty well. He's also doing better sitting in his bumbo, although he loves to lean forward in it, and he still loves playing on his back - with his feet straight up in the air, of course!  He's not rolling over consistently yet, but he is so close.  I know one day he'll just get the hang of it and then there will be no going back.

Henry does talk to us all the time now!  Lots of "aaa" sounds and "gggg's."  He also is pretty good at blowing raspberries with his mouth and making all sorts of shouting noises when he wants.  Some mornings he wakes up early and just lays there talking to himself in his crib.  It is hilarious, but so loud!  He hasn't quite learned the meaning of "inside voice" yet.

We had another playdate with his friend Dean last weekend.  Look at these sweet boys together:
Henry and Dean
Henry looks so big next to Dean, but I know it won't be long before Dean catches up to him!

Henry's favorite thing is still kicking his legs.  If he continues he's going to be the best soccer player around!  (Or maybe he'll be a kicker on the football team like his dad.)  Even as I write this, he is in his swing, kicking his legs like crazy and talking.  It's really pretty funny...and so sweet.  We love you so much, little babe!

Little Man

Henry had his 4 month doctor's appointment this week (although he's technically closer to 4.5 months).  He weighs 15lbs, 1oz (39th percentile) and is 26 inches long (76th percentile).  Basically, he is still long and lean!  However, when you look at him, I doubt anyone would describe him as "lean."  :)  He's happy and healthy and all was well.  He did have to get his vaccinations again - same as at 2 months - two shots and an oral one.  It is so sad when he gets his shots.  I know it will probably be worse when he is bigger and can anticipate what is coming, but right now it just takes him by surprise and makes him so mad.  He was almost asleep the entire doctor's appointment (worn out from a full morning of preschool, I guess), and was laying on the table with his hands above his head and eyes half closed, all sweet and relaxed.  Then the nurse stuck him!  Poor little thing.  It didn't take him too long to calm down at least.  He seems to be handling them better this time too.  He hasn't been nearly as fussy as he was last time.  I think it helps that he is so much bigger.  The doctor said that a lot of his fussiness last time was probably due to his little thighs being sore.  He's got a lot more "meat" on his bones now, so hopefully that has helped.

Big Boy!
We are very thankful for how well he is doing and how much he is growing.  He goes back again in two months for another well visit and another round of shots.  I know they are super important, and I am glad he is getting most of them now while he won't remember them, but poor thing...I feel so bad for him!
One thing he has started doing this week is giggling more.  Like his first few smiles, he makes you work hard for it, but really it is the sweetest thing when he starts to laugh.  Like I said before, it is addictive.  He's also discovered his feet and toes and loves to grab them.  He hasn't figured out how to get them in his mouth, but he lays on his back with his legs in the air and holds on to his feet.  It is pretty funny.

Since birth, Henry has loved his pacifier.  It has been a lifesaver on numerous occasions, and I always have it attached to him so that we can find it at a moment's notice.  I have noticed lately, however, that while he still likes his paci, he is definitely starting to suck on his fingers more.  Most of the time it is his right thumb, which he puts in the side of his mouth.  It is super cute.  I know I might regret this habit later, but I was a thumbsucker myself so I love seeing him do it now.  The pacifier is still important, especially in moments of particular despair, but more and more he is going to his hand.

Sucking my thumb...in the corner of my mouth.
Another thing I love is that he has started really paying attention to things.  He will watch the TV intently if we let him, and you can tell he is really observing his surroundings.  I decided the other night that this was the perfect time to start reading books together, so while he was laying on his mat doing some tummy time, I brought out some of our books.  I think he likes hearing my voice as I read them, and he definitely was looking at all the colors and shapes on the pages.  Hopefully, this is the start of a long and happy relationship with books and reading!

These pigeon books are hilarious - seriously!

5 Whole Years

On Saturday, June 2, Matt and I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary!  Each year, we have managed to get away at least for one night to celebrate and this year was no different.  (Although in so many ways it was different!)  Last year, we headed to a beautiful house in the mountains.  We had just found out that I was pregnant and no one else knew yet.  It was a great weekend and we were definitely still processing our news.  This year, we have our sweet babe here with us, and I knew that I was not ready to leave him for an entire weekend.  Matt had the great idea to go to the beach.  We stayed with my parents Friday night and then Saturday afternoon (around 3:30pm), we headed to a hotel down the beach for the night, leaving Henry with his grandparents.  He was fine, of course, and had so much fun.  It was hard for me, but good.  The leaving part is definitely the hardest.  Once we were gone, we had a great time.  We walked around the hotel and down on the beach, then got ready and had a delicious dinner out.  Sunday morning we woke up and had breakfast at Cracker Barrel and then we were back at my parents by 11am.  I was missing our little guy!  But it was really nice to have some time with just me and Matt and to be able to focus on us and celebrate the past 5 years.  I have very thankful for the husband and all that he does for us and all that he is.  Really, he's pretty spectacular.

Hanging out on the beach.

All dressed up for dinner.
