12 weeks!

Woo-hoo, we hit 12 weeks! (Well, ok, almost...we've started our 12th week, technically.)  This is definitely one of the milestones that we've been waiting for.  After 3 months, your risk of things going wrong declines phenomenally and you are close to starting your second trimester which is when I should regain energy and (hopefully) start to feel better.  That last post about feeling a little better has held somewhat true.  I do notice a general increase in my energy in that I am not falling asleep at 9pm every night, but if I have a busy day, I still really need a mid-day nap (which is pretty impossible to come by when you work all day).  Also, I am not nauseous all day most days now.  Just when I wake up until lunch time and then again in the evenings.  At least I get the afternoons off from feeling bad.

Last night was fun because I finally got in touch with Kristin, Catherine and Carolyn to tell them.  It's a pretty amazing thing that I was able to talk to all three of them in the same night, but I guess it just goes to show that when you're intentional about something you can really get it done.  It was so fun to tell them.  It is definitely getting easier to tell people, the more people I tell.  I think I'll probably tell my work either this week or next. Then after that I suppose the cat will basically be out of the bag.  So fun!  A little nevre-wracking, but still fun!  We don't have our next doctor's appointment until August 10, but I do feel better now that things are moving along as they should.  My stomach is getting really hard, and I can tell that it is starting to poke out a little.  It's not a change most people will notice yet, but I can definitely tell.  According to everything I am reading, our babe should be about the size of a lime now.  That's a pretty big change from the appleseed where we started!  Grow, baby, grow!  That's all I have to say!

Also, this is a momentous post, because up until now this blog has been completely private.  Even though I've been writing for two months, I have not published anything because I wanted to wait until we had told most everyone.  So after today, it will be public.  Welcome everyone.  Please know that I started this basically so that I could remember everything that I was feeling and thinking throughout this process, and I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts, even if they get a bit (parenthetical) and rambling at times!

Grow, baby, grow!

Could it be?

Could it be that I am starting to get over the constant nausea?  I am trying not to get too excited, but today I actually haven't felt terrible all morning. I also have noticed that I am starting to get some energy back.  I'm only cautiously optimistic because I don't want to get too excited only to wake up and feel horrible again tomorrow.  However, I am almost 12 weeks now, so maybe (hopefully?) things are starting to look up.  I am excited to move into the second trimester and feel good and actually start to look pregnant.  We'll see how the weekend goes, but here's hoping!

Going for a run while sitting in my chair...

So I read something on one of the pregnancy websites from which I get a lot of information these days that made me feel a lot better about something.  The website said that my body is working harder at rest right now than my non-pregnant body worked on a run.  Thank goodness!  There are some nights when I am absolutely exhausted.  And I feel like such an bum because it's not like I've done anything to make me that tired!  I know they say exhaustion, especially in the first trimester, is a normal part of pregnancy, but it was validating to read it put that way.  At least I know I'm not crazy.

This weekend we headed to Bald Head with the Richardsons.  It was a beautiful weekend to be at the beach.  I was feeling pretty terrible the entire time, but it is better to be sick at the beach than sick at home, right?  And I realized that one member of our family has yet to make her pictorial debut on this blog.  If she could read and knew that I had failed to include her, she'd probably be very upset with me.  So without further adieu, here is sweet Fisher, enjoying her ferry ride to BHI.

This girl loves the beach!
Anyways, things are moving along.  I am 11 weeks now.  With each passing week, I feel myself getting more and more excited.  I am hoping that the queasiness subsides in the next few weeks and that I start to feel more like myself.  It will certainly be good to have some energy back.

Oh and one quick thing that I want to write here so I don't ever forget...when I called to tell my grandmothers that I am pregnant, they both made a comment along the lines of, "I didn't think you and Matt were ever going to have kids...you're getting kind of old!"  That isn't a verbatim quote, but it is close enough.  How funny is that!  I love it!  They are both extremely excited and it was so fun to tell them.  That just made me laugh and I didn't want to forget it ever.

Happy 11 weeks little babe.  They say you're the size of a fig now, and that your bones are hardening and you are moving around.  I believe it, judging by how much you were squirming on the ultrasound last week.  I cannot wait until I can actually feel you moving!

Shout it from the rooftops...well...sorta...

Woo-hoo!  Yesterday was such a good day!  We had our appointment and this time we didn't have to wait nearly as long.  I think we were in and out in about 30 minutes.  They tried to listen to the baby's heartbeat with the doppler, but I was still too early to hear it (we could only hear my heartbeat), so I got to have another ultrasound.  I was actually really excited about this because I wanted to see it again.  I knew it would actually look more like a baby this time instead of a little blob, and I wanted to have some updated pictures to show when we told everyone.  We got a really good look at him (her? - at this point, I'm just going to arbitrarily choose a gender-specific pronoun so I don't have to write, "it").  He was wiggling all around and flailing his arms.  It was almost like he was waving at us.  So cute!  And we got a sweet little profile shot of him.  He was so wiggly that it was hard for us to see his heartbeat, but the doctor assured me that she could see it, so I felt fine about that.  It was just amazing to see that little thing in there!  We go back August 10, at which point they should be able to hear the heartbeat with the doppler (I'll be 14 weeks), so we probably won't have another ultrasound until we find out the gender (hopefully in September).  This was also a big day because we had decided that we would tell our families after this appointment.  Below is the run-down on how that went.  Honestly, it couldn't have gone more perfectly with everyone.  But first...
Yay, baby Richardson!  Grow, baby, grow!
Ok, so here's the lowdown on how we told everyone:

The Richardsons:  We lucked out because the Richardsons invited us to dinner last night and Zack and Caroline were going to be there too (we did miss Brendon though!).  It was coincidental, but perfect timing for us.  We had planned to just go over to their house, but it was better this way...less awkward.  I came up with the idea to take some of the pictures from our recent July 4 trip to the beach and hide the ultrasound picture in them.   Then at dinner, we asked Barbara if she would like to see some pictures of our nieces.  Of course she did, and she started to flip through them.  I had placed the ultrasound picture only about 6-7 pictures in, so I knew it wouldn't take too long for her to get to it.  When she did, it kind of fell out.  She picked it up, and looked at it, a bit perplexed at first...then Matt said, "That one's ours."  Matt's dad was sitting right beside her and immediately they both knew.  She welled up with tears and Billy looked like he was about to explode with happiness.  Zack knew this was coming because he had inadvertently found out about it all after our very first doctor's appointment, but Matt has sworn him to secrecy.  Caroline got distracted by our waitress for a quick minute before she realized what was going on.  It was perfect.  And happened exactly how we hoped it would.  Even though they had had their suspicions, they were still shocked and excited.  I think they had stopped thinking about it for a while.  Needless to say, it was a great dinner.

Mom and Dad:  So after we left the Richardson's house that night, I told Matt that I was going to call my parents.  I had wanted to make sure Dad would be home from work, so I didn't call earlier.  Also, I knew that my aunt, uncle, and cousins were there on vacation, so it would be a fun way to tell everyone at once.  I called my mom, but she was driving home from Calasbash with my aunt and cousin.  I was thinking, "Shoot, she's not with Dad, I can't tell her until she gets home and he's there too."  Plus, Mom kept telling me that Dad was probably already in bed (it was only 9pm) because he'd been up super early that day.  So I decide to try and talk with her all the way home and hopefully, she'll get to the house, Dad will still be up, and I can tell her then.  I manage to chat about everything under the sun until they get in the driveway...then Mom says, "Well, let me go...we're home now."  (!!!!)  I didn't know what to do, so I just said, "ok" and that was that.  I knew I was going to call my sister next, so I was hoping she'd have some advice.   Matt thought I was nuts for not telling them right then, but my Mom cut me off, so I couldn't!   (Totally not her fault, how was she to know?!)

Sissy and Andrew:  At this point, I'm freaking out a little.  So I call Sissy, we chat for a while, then I tell her that I have a really cute picture from the beach that is on my phone and I want to email it to her.  She has her computer with her, so I say I'm going to email it and then call her right back.  I send them the ultrasound picture and call her back so I can hear her reaction.  She is so excited when she sees it.  She said that she knew something must be up when I called so late because I don't usually do that.  After sharing some excitement, I tell her what just happened with Mom, so she says that I have to call them back right now.

Mom and Dad continued...:  I get up my courage and call Mom back.  I tell her that there is something I forgot to tell her before and that I hope she's not busy in February because there is a new grandson or granddaughter on the way.  She is excited, I can hear ReRe scream in the background.  Mom then tells me that she thought it was so weird that I was so chatty before...ha. ha.  Dad had just gone upstairs, so Mom goes upstairs and lets me tell him (joking that she's ready to do CPR if necessary).  Of course everyone is excited and I am so relieved that I actually got to tell them that night!  I didn't know what I was going to do otherwise.  Mom urged me to call Diane and Ken, which I did, and again, we were met with more excitement.  Diane was ready to start decorating a nursery!  I think we'll wait until we know the gender to really start with that, but don't worry, Di, I'll be seeking your help at that point!

Overall, it was a really great night.  It couldn't have gone more perfectly.  I told Matt after it all that my cheeks seriously hurt from smiling so much.  It feels so good to have the secret out to our families.  We're still going to wait until the official end of the first trimester to tell the whole world, but it is so exciting to finally let some other people know.  And it makes it even more real that before.  I feel like I shouldn't even have to go to work anymore this week.  I just want to hang out and talk about it to people who know.  Lol.  Now, more than before, I am praying that everything works out and that the babe is protected and growing exactly as it should.  All signs point to yes and things are progressing exactly as they should.  It is still a bit surreal, but God-willing, we're really going to have a sweet little babe come February.  Woo-hoo!

C'mon Wednesday!

Matt and I are counting down the days until Wednesday because that is my next doctor's appointment!  My expectations are so much bigger this time around than they were for the first one (because I had no idea what to expect at that point), that I hope I am not disappointed.  I should be ten weeks now and hopefully, they'll do another ultrasound so that we can really get a good look at the babe! My appointment is at 1pm, but I've actually taken the whole afternoon off of work.  I knew I wouldn't want to go back for an hour or two, and we're planning to tell our parents after this appointment, so I knew I'd be too excited to work.  I am so excited to let some people in on our secret!  It is a bit nerve wracking though.  Right now, basically nobody knows but me and Matt.  The more people that know, the more real is it.  But I can assure you that it's real regardless.  I have been feeling pretty crummy lately.  The nausea is constant.  Eating helps - but I feel like I am EATING ALL THE TIME - which annoys me.  Also, I've noticed that I feel better on the weekends than I do during the week.  I think it's because I'm busier and it keeps my mind off of how terrible I feel.  During the week, just sitting at my desk at work, it is hard to get my mind off of things.   The mornings and evenings are the worst.  And then I'm ready to fall asleep by 9pm.  I am ready to feel like myself again, but continue to be thankful for the reason I am feeling all of this.

In other news, I forgot to mention in my last post, but our waterline finally was fixed a week later.  We got back in our house just before the July 4th weekend.  The man cave still needs to be repaired and our yard took a pretty big hit from all the digging, but Matt has already been working on the yard, and we plan to repair the man cave next month, so things are moving along.  It is good to be home again and have water. Now, we're waiting to hear from the utilities company - hopefully, they'll reduce our $1200 water bill!  Once we know about that, I'll feel like we have a pretty good handle on this whole thing.  That is our last outlying issue really.

Alright, pray for a quick week.  I'll definitely post again after my big appointment.  C'mon Wednesday!

Happy 4th of July!

It is hard to believe that the Fourth of July has come and gone.  We headed down to the beach to visit my family and had a great weekend full of fun in the sun and relaxation.  My only complaint is that it didn't last longer.  My sister, her husband and my sweet nieces were there, which certainly added to the fun.  It is so amazing how distinct their personalities already are from one another.  But they are clearly the cutest little girls around!  Uncle Ken also was there  - so there were many helpers to chase after Maddie and Audrey, and trust me, we were all needed!

The best family photo.

The real stars of the weekend.

Matt & Audrey building a sand castle - how cute!
After one day of being there with everyone, I woke up and told Matt that I thought I really wanted to spill the beans to my family this weekend.  However, by that evening, I completely changed my mind and decided that we should go with our original (well, second original) plan, and wait until after the doctor's appointment next week.  I tell you what...the mood swings and changes in feelings are incredible.  I was convinced I wanted to tell them, and then a few hours later (with no convincing from Matt one way or the other, he was totally good to do whatever I wanted), I felt like we should definitely wait.  I still do wish I could tell everyone in person, but we will just have to come up with some fun way to do it so that we can still gauge everyone's surprise-level.

Over the past couple of weeks I have had to tell a few close friends some "fibs" here and there.  I feel horrible about it, but we just haven't been ready to tell anyone yet.  So dear friends, please know that I felt terrible immediately after telling you the little white lies, but that I have the best intentions, and trust me, I can't wait until I can share this secret with you!

Overall, I am still feeling pretty crummy.  The mood swings, nausea and tiredness feel like a lot some days, but I know it's for good reason, so I am trying hard not to complain.  Also, I think I'm definitely starting to expand just a little.  I know it is really early, and I don't know if it's because I'm pretty small to begin with, but it's nothing anyone else would probably notice yet, however, I certainly do!  When I put on my clothes for dance last week, I thought, "whoa, I kind of look a little pregnant already!"  I know it's probably just a  little added weight and bloating, but it is still kind of crazy to see.  According to my weekly emails, we're at 9 weeks now and the babe is the size of an olive.  It's growing!  I am so ready to go to the doctor next Wednesday.  It will be good to see it again and know that everything is on track.  Also, we'll probably start telling people at that point - I am so nervous yet so excited about that!  Eeeeeee!
